Created in 2005, Mediafin owns several Belgian media outlets specialized in finance. These include two dailies: Tijd in Dutch and L’Echo in French.
Mediafin wanted to find an alternative solution for producing highly factual financial content, such as equity portfolio and stock market newswires. Its journalists spent considerable time writing useful but repetitive newswires. They also needed to work shifts to be present at the beginning, middle and end of each trading day.
Mediafin was also looking for a new way to attract subscribers and build loyalty through personalization, enabling users to create virtual portfolios online and receive daily email updates on their stock market performance.
As part of its Digital News Initiative, the group commissioned Syllabs to develop two unique solutions for generating this financial content.

Working with Mediafin journalists, Syllabs created several text engines to generate different stock market newswires: reports at the opening, mid-session and closing of several European stock markets, and weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual comparisons. These texts are supported by summary tables and charts. And to meet the needs of Belgian readers, the texts are generated in both French and Dutch.
Using financial data from an external provider, Syllabs set up a data planning tool that continuously checks the availability of supplier data to be able to generate highly responsive newsfeed.
Mediafin journalists can access the generated texts and edit them if necessary before publication.
For the personalized portfolios, Syllabs designed texts that are sent directly to subscribers with a daily update on their share performance!
